What are reptiles?

What are reptiles? Reptiles- like snakes, turtles, and alligators- are cold-blooded animals that have a backbone and scales. Scales are little plates made of protein that protect a reptile's skin and keep it from drying out.

Reptiles are similar to amphibians, but unlike amphibians, reptiles can spend their whole lives out of water. Reptiles lay hard eggs that can be laid on land and don't have a tadpole stage.

Reptiles can live in a variety of habitats - from swamps or forests to deserts .
