Painted Turtle

(Michigan's State Reptile)

Scientific Name: Chrysemys picta

Description: Painted turtles are brightly marked and have a smooth shell. They are usually 3 to 10 inches long and weigh about 2 oz. on average. Its shell is greenish brown or black with red or yellow markings on it.  

Habitat: Painted turtles are found all over- from southern Canada down into northern Mexico. They like to live in quiet shallow freshwater that has a thick layer of mud. 

Food: These turtles are omnivores meaning they eat both plants and animals. They eat plants and small animals like insects, and small fish.
