Scientific Name: Eumeces fasciatus

Description: Yes, Michigan is home to a species of lizard. These lizards usually grow to about 5 to 8 inches long and have a very skinny body. They have 5 yellowish stripes running down their back on a black or dark brown body. They can live up to 6 years in the wild, but most die well before then. 

Habitat: These skinks range from southern Michigan and Ontario down into northern Florida and eastern Texas. They like to live in moist wooded areas that have plenty of cover as well as open areas to sun themselves in.  

Food: These lizards eat mostly insects like spiders, crickets, and beetles. They also have been known to eat snails and small frogs or mice.
