northern pike

Scientific Name: Esox lucius 

Description: Northern pike have a dark green or brown body with light colored horizontal bars or spots across its body. The underside of its body is white or cream colored. They average 18-20 inches long, but can occasionally grow up to as long as 50 inches.  Pike have an average life span of 10 to 12 years.  


Habitat: Northern pike are found all throughout the world's northern waters, from Europe and Asia, around to Alaska and the northern U.S. They are very adaptable to many different types of habitats . They can live in cold deep lakes or warm shallow ponds . They have a large tolerance for different temperatures or oxygen levels. 

Feeding: Northern pike are highly skilled predators that will eat just about anything they can swallow. They have a very complex jaw with lots of teeth that lets them kill fish, frogs, crayfish, small mammals, and even other pike.
