Black-capped Chickadee

Scientific name : Poecile atricapillus

Description : The chickadee is a small bird about 5 inches in length with a black cap, white cheeks and a black chest.  These features make the black-capped chi ckad ee easy to distinguish from other birds.  Male and female chickadees are similar in appearance.

 

Habitat :  Most chickadees are found in small flocks around wooded areas.  They are common to most of North America.  During the winter many chickadees fly to suburban areas where people often feed them.

Feeding :  Chickadees eat insects, seeds or berries.  They also eat from bird feeders.
